Do we have to have wifi at home?
No, families are not required to have Internet or wifi. While wifi will be a helpful tool for your child, we are aware that not all families have this resource in their homes. One of the reasons that the iPad was chosen as our device is the ability that the students have to download content such as worksheets or teachers' notes to the iPad while still at school. Any assignments that require the use of the Internet can be completed during class time and before and after school while students are on the school network, much the same as they currently do now when assignments require the use of a computer lab.
What if my student doesn't remember to download work during the school day? Is there any way to get assignments after hours?
If a family does not have wifi, students can access the Internet on their iPad from any open wifi network. Several businesses in town, including McDonald's, have wifi networks available for their customers. The public library also has wifi available. Also, the wifi access point in the high school media center can be reached from outside the building, and it is available 24/7. Students may approach the building from Parking Lot O and walk up near the large media center windows into order to connect to the network.
Are there scholarships available for families to waive the protection plan fees?
While there are no scholarships available to waive the protection plan fees, the school district would be willing to make arrangements on an individual basis for families to make payments on the insurance plan, rather than pay the $40.00 amount upfront. Payments could be as low as $5 per month per iPad. Criteria to qualify for the payment plan include inclusion in the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch program. Families interested in participating in the payment plan should contact Susan Meyer, Director of Instructional Technology, at smeyer2@becker.k12.mn.us to make these arrangements.
My child is taking some of her classes PSEO at St. Cloud State this year? Can she still participate in this program?
In order to participate, a student must be taking at least one class onsite at Becker High School during each semester.
